Euro2008 over for devastated Babel.

Ryan BabelLiverpool’s Dutch forward Ryan Babel has been ruled out of Euro 2008 after tearing ankle ligaments in training this morning.

Scans showed the extent of the injury and Babel was given the devastating news that he would be out of action for weeks.

Dutch coach Marco van Basten will be entitled to call up a replacement on the condition Babel’s injury is confirmed by a UEFA medic.

Ryan Babel in training for Holland, prior to suffering torn ankle ligaments ruling him out of Euro 2008Liverpool’s club doctor Mark Waller will be in touch with the player as soon as possible to discuss treatment aimed at getting him ready if at all possible for pre-season training in 6 weeks’ time.

Babel played in eleven of Holland’s twelve qualifiers and was hopeful of playing a big role in their shot at the title, which begins against Italy on June 9th.

The Netherlands side play their final friendly ahead of the tournament tomorrow, when they host Wales in Rotterdam. Liverpool’s Dirk Kuyt is expected to make an appearance after scoring in his last start for Holland, a game Babel also scored in. Kuyt was a 65th minute sub in the 1-1 draw with Denmark on Thursday.

  1. A couple of hours ago a new story popped up on the newsnow: Liverpool website from Setanta Sports entitled (Mascherano in no mood to compromise).

The story apparently had been taken from an interview given to the Sun.

I commented on the site in a polite manner (I don’t use bad language) to the effect that what the hell was Mascherano doing talking to the Sun anyway, expecting to see other comments about it. I kept looking for a while but the few comments where just about Mascherano needing to think about the club rather than his country. I thoought that it was strange that these where submited after my remarks, but I know they won’t publish anything that shows them in a bad light. I then noticed the main storyhad been edited and all mention of the Sun had been removed, this must have been done as soon as I posted. Are they scared of losing their deal with LFC TV. Or was I seeing things.

    The edited story is here:

  2. @LFC Malta: Could be five weeks, could be seven, according to his coach (van Basten). He’ll have plenty more opportunities to playing the big tournaments.
