CL Result: Inter 0 (0) Liverpool 1 (3)

Liverpool boss Rafa Benítez: “It was a difficult game against a difficult team. We knew we were playing against a good team. They are top of the table in Italy because they are really good.

“When you talk about Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United they are also really good. We are in a good position and so are they.”

“You can keep him (Torres) playing every game. If he has time he will be okay. But when you have two games in a week at very high intensity it is not easy. But now he is fit and we will play in four days so I think that he can still play. (He can play) Almost every game, but it depends if he is tired or not. Sometimes you need to protect the players too.”

Internazionale coach Roberto Mancini: “The regret is not to have had the chance to end the match with 11 men. Liverpool had a couple of chances in the first half, we were feeling good, but Burdisso has been sent off and things changed. Their goal arrived after we lost the ball in midfield.

“I want to underline that Burdisso’s second yellow card can be disputed and this is the only regret.

“Liverpool’s defence is strong, but we created four chances that could have become goals if we had been able to finish better. Anyway, all the players have done their best and there must be no regrets.

“These have been two matches in which we have played with 10 men – probably it’s also our responsibility – but then things in these situations become difficult. All eliminations give you pain, but we have to not make a drama about it, because we have the Italian league to win.

“I know I still have four years to run on my contract, but the next two-and-a-half months will be my last guiding Inter. I’ve told the lads and it’s right to tell everyone. It’s a decision I’ve taken and has nothing to do with tonight’s defeat.”

  1. Interesting article. It would seem that Gillett must say something now. I find this notching up of the charm offensive fascinating it’s as if Hicks has been met with the same response from all prospective backing viz the fans hate you, some club officials feel the same.Hicks has placed zero value on the emotional involvement we have as fans. Now our intelligence is insulted. We can spot a phoney Tom!I think that the quality of our win in Milan owed more to our play than to Inter’s failures on the night. It just seemed to me that we dealt with the problems well after a first ten minutes when hey sliced through our midfield a couple of times. In fact if Kuyt and Babel had shown a bit more control at crucial early moments we could have gone in at half time a goal up. Reina was superb, as crucial in his role as Gerrard and Torres in theirs.

  2. Besides Reina and Torres, I also thought Masch had a particularly fine game (and it was a good thing too as Lucas often looked like a chuk with his head cut off).  On the downside Kuyt (yet again in a game against real quality opposition) showed that despite being goodhearted he is not up to this level of football.   Also thought big Sami’s performance was a bit of a concern making me wonder whats happening with Dan Agger??   On the whole though you can’t argue with a result like that despite the ref doing us some favours.

  3. Agree with Anfielder on the Masch/Lucas comments.  Thought we had cover for Alonso, if the rumours are true about him going in the summer, but Lucas falls someway short.  Skrtel, again a no nonsense solid enough performance. Final ball from kuyt was poor.  As was the case in the first game, don’t think the red card made alot of difference.  They showed a few flashes and if their strikers didn’t have tunnel vision we would have been 2 down.  But job done.  well done lads

  4. We have a great nucleus coming on.

    1) We have a shape of play that accommodates all the/our talents

    2) We have a team slowly in Rafa’s image. Once we get some wingers – certainly on the right wing, if Babel can carry on- we’ll be better balanced.

    3) Rafa’s now got a front-man in Torres that allows Gerrard to be gung-ho and go for goals without the discpline required by Monster, Alonso or Lucas. Haven’t heard the chorus of calls for Crouch lately? (Please don’t let this be read as me not supporting Crouch. I want to keep him. But we should remember Rafa gave him his chance and stuck by him when things were bad.)
Lucas has a little way to go but I think he’ll do just fine with a little more experience and play time.

    4) The spine of the team is looking good. Reina, Carragher, Skrtel, Masch, Lucas, Gerrard, Babel and Torres.

    and

    5) Rafa’s feeling a bit more confident in his job and the confidence is feeding down to the team. Just hope the Hicks and DICs don’t mess this up.

Lucas is doing fine. I think he needs more play time and experience to kick-on.

For sure you’d want to keep Alonso. I’m sure that Rafa wants him too – Balague for one always eulogises about their father/son relationship. Alonso’s problem – assuming his girlfriend is Spanish – is whether he wants to go back home to raise the child. Hopefully not because he is slowly but surely coming back to his best.

As for Kuyt. I like the guy. I think he’s doing well – although he’s not a winger – considering he’s playing out of position. I also think we shouldn’t underestimate the loss of his father has had on his life. I just hope he will prove value for money by getting more goals. Maybe Rafa can somehow get Kuyt to learn from Drogba’s first season and kick-on again.

  5. Sorry Midland-Red but liking a guy and rating him as a player are definitely two different things and in Kuyt’s case I have no trouble making the distinction.  If we ever want to break out of this cycle of being dead and buried in the title race by Christmas (because we can’t break teams down) then we’ll have to recruit better attacking players than poor old Dirk and take some of the burden off Torres.
