Full Time: Liverpool win 2-1 at Portsmouth

Portsmouth 1(Kamara 33) – Liverpool 2 (Morientes 4, Garcia 44)

Liverpool did all they could tonight in their fight for fourth place. A 2-1 win means they move above Bolton into fifth place.

Liverpool opened the scoring – Fernando Morientes after four minutes. Kamara then pulled one back for Portsmouth after a mistake by Jerzy Dudek. Dudek did make amends for his mistake with a number of good saves, but would have been relieved after Luis Garcia put Liverpool back in front on the stroke of half-time.

Liverpool started the game without Steven Gerrard, who came on midway through the second half.

In the end a tired looking Liverpool team had to hang on for the victory, with ex-Red Patrick Berger looking dangerous after coming on as a sub.

Meanwhile over at Goodison, Everton managed to beat a lacklustre Manchester United team 1-0. United ended the game with just nine men after Gary Neville and Paul Scholes had been sent off. Everton stay three points ahead of Liverpool, with a game in hand.

Liverpool team: Dudek, Finnan, Hyypia, Carragher, Traore, Riise, Alonso, Biscan (Gerrard 66), Garcia (Smicer 46), Morientes, Baros (Cisse 75). Unused subs: Carson, Pellegrino.
