Blackburn v LFC – Gerrard, Torres start; Kuyt, Agger subs

Barclays Premier League – January 5 2011.

Blackburn Rovers v Liverpool

Steve Kean and Roy HodgsonBoth sides have had new owners installed since the start of the season – but only one has had a change of manager. Sam Allardyce made way for Steve Kean, a change that wasn’t initially popular with Blackburn fans. Roy Hodgson remains in post, a failure to change that is extremely unpopular with Liverpool fans.

For tonight’s game Paul Konchesky returns to the defence in place of Fabio Aurelio, with Daniel Agger dropped back to the bench, making way for Sotirios Kyrgiakos.

Raul Mereiles left the pitch early through injury against Bolton on Saturday, he’s replaced in the starting line-up by Steven Gerrard, the captain. Dirk Kuyt is also left out, he’s sitting on the bench with the scorer of Saturday’s late winner, Joe Cole, his replacement tonight. Maxi is likely to switch to the right to allow Cole to start on the left.

Liverpool’s other scorer from Saturday, Fernando Torres, also starts tonight but with a big game coming up against Manchester United in the FA Cup 3rd round this weekend it remains to be seen if Hodgson chooses to withdraw him from the action early.

Liverpool need the three points desperately, but with only one away win this season – and Roy Hodgson hardly renowned for getting his sides to win away from home – there may be more disappointment for Reds supporters.

  1. Absolutely SHOCKING defense. Kriakos and Johnson were all over the place. Roy HAS TO GO! How bad does it have to get before NESV make the decision that is so glaringly obvious to most of us.

The players have a lot to account for as we lacked any spirit and fight. There are too many players in our squad who are not doing themselves any justice and it saddens me to say…..but they are not good enough to wear the red jersey.

Major changes required starting with Roy.

  2. How can the owners not act decisively after such an embarrassment against a side we used to beat with ease. The longer they leave his sacking the more it will drag the players confidence down. They must dread taking to the field under his (mis)management.

Agger should start in defence ahead of Soto every game from now on. And get Kelly in and move Johnson to RW. That at least would shore up a leaking defence and maybe we can start nicking 1-0 wins. As a supporter of 45 years I can’t believe I’m having to write things like this.

  3. @ Ray….absolutely. Kelly is a reliable right back and Johnson clearly would be better deployed at RW providing defensive cover when we are not in possession.

A major lack of width and creativity. Joe Cole was holding possession withot any real outlet on a couple of occassions. Why was Agger not in the starting XI?

Dare I say it…..Torres needs dropping as something is not right either physically or mentally. We need to sign at least one of not two strikers to create real competition up front.

A Liverpool team without fight is a sad thing to see. Pass and move never even came into it.

  4. I have just watched the Blackburn V LFC match for the 2nd time and my message to the USA owners is “WAKE UP MR SMITH”, Rome burned whilst Nero fiddled.
LFC URGENTLY NEED a new Manager, Mr Hodgson is totally out of his depth, Dalglish as interim, then a permanent Manager. Then at least 4 truly acommlished players who can make a difference now, for at the moment only Gerrard and Rienna are worth their salt. If you do not move quickly, you run the risk of loosing Gerrard, Reinna, Agger, Torres and maybe Kuyt who are potentially, your only best footballers.
