Liverpool v Unirea Urziceni

It might not have the glamour of the Champions League but the Europa League is Liverpool’s last hope of silverware this season and Rafa Benitez has put a strong side out.

Pepe Reina is in goal as expected but many expected Jamie Carragher to sit it out and be allowed more time to get over his injury. Instead he starts at right-back and with Aurelio returning at left-back Emliano Insua is on the bench. Soto Kyrgiakos is on the bench, his domestic suspension of course not applicable to this fixture, with Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel both starting.

Mascherano starts in midfield but Lucas is rested. Alberto Aquilani returns, with Steven Gerrard, Dirk Kuyt, Albert Riera and David Ngog in the eleven.

Liverpool: Reina, Carragher, Skrtel, Agger, Aurelio, Mascherano, Aquilani, Kuyt, Gerrard, Riera, Ngog
Subs: Cavalieri, Kyrgiakos, Babel, Lucas, Insua, Degen, Pacheco

  1. Calling all lifelong lads from the Kop, can you help me? I kave been searching for 15 years for Jimmy or Jim (James Albert) Boardman who lived and breathed Liverpool FC. He told me when I was 6 years old Everton was a swear word and never to say it !!! He would be about 70 years old now. He is my lovely, mad as a hatter dad and I would love to see him again. If you know him, please tell him to email me at jane.eggleton@hotmail.co.uk

  2. Benitez’s last hope of trophy is on Europa League. Although Liverpool are leading by 1-0 but the risk is there travel to Romania because the gap is small.

To secure his head from being axed, Rafa must make sure the Red to qualify. Torres’s return should leads Liverpool to seal a victory.
