Kewell is off to Germany next summer

Harry Kewell’s nightmare 12 months looks to be showing more signs of being over today after he helped Australia to qualify for next summer’s World Cup finals in Germany.

Australia won their second leg play off against Uruguay 1-0, meaning the scores were level on aggregate at the end of normal time. The score stayed the same until the end of extra time, so penalties were required.

The Aussies won the penalty shoot-out 4-2, and a delighted Kewell scored his penalty.

There were a massive 82,698 fans inside the Telstra Stadium in Sydney.

Kewell will be credited with an assist – it was his miskick that set Marco Bresciano up for the goal on 38 minutes. Kewell had been sent on as a sub shortly before.

Along with Kewell, the scores of Australia’s penalties were Neill, Vidmar and Aloisi. Mark Viduka missed his, but goalkeeper Schwarzer ensured that it didn’t matter, earning the man-of-the-match award in the process.

Congratulations from AnfieldRoad.com to Harry and his team-mates on a brilliant achievement.
