Shay Given: We can beat Liverpool

Shay Given is looking forward to the visit to St James’ Park by Liverpool at the weekend.

Whereas Liverpool lost out to Chelsea in the Carling Cup Final,
Newcastle are still buoyed by the win over Chelsea in the FA Cup.

Given said, "We’ve got a lot of big games coming up and we’ve got to
give the crowd something to shout about. It’s up to the players to do
that and I feel we are getting better every week. They’re getting
behind the team, especially against Chelsea. It was probably the best
atmosphere all season."

Graham Sounness of course will be building up his players in an extra
special way for this match – he always does against Liverpool – and so
no doubt Shay Given’s extra confidence has been helped in part by his
manager’s desire to win this game above all others.

Given said, "Victories breed confidence and as a unit we’re feeling
more confident. We’ve had some great results and the way we’re playing
there’s no reason why we can’t beat Liverpool. I don’t think we fear
anyone. It’s amazing what a few victories do in breeding confidence.
It’s a huge thing in football and it’s very high at the moment."

Newcastle have certainly been struggling to live up to the price-tag
they have cost to build in recent years, but with this recent run of
success the demoralised and tired Liverpool players need to be ready to
fight.
